These meteorological events commonly affect Maryland during the late spring, summer, and early fall seasons, often occurring when contrasting cold and warm air masses collide.

How To Prepare for a Thunderstorm
- Monitor local weather and news.
- Have a plan to keep your phone charged in case of emergency.
- Be prepared for a power outage.
- Protect your home.
- Put away or secure items outside that can blow away.
- Secure objects that would be unsafe to bring inside such as grills and propane tanks.
- Trim or remove trees close to your house that could fall over.
- Review your home insurance policy.
- Find out if your home is prone to flooding. If so, elevate the heating system, water heater, and electrical panel.
Storm Preparedness Guide
- Pay attention to weather advisories and storm warnigs.
- Have a flashlight and fresh batteries.
- Refuel vehicles and ensure they are in good working condition.
- Have a phone that does not require an electrical outlet to use. Charge cell phones or have a car cell phone charger.
- Get a lot of water and packed or canned foods that do not require refrigeration or cooking. Be sure to have a non-electric can opener.
- Have a battery-powered radio to keep informed.
- Endure that you have enough supply of medications, cash and other necessities.
- Have a plan to check on neighbors and family members.

During a thunderstorm, it is safest to remain indoors. Where there is thunder there will be lightning too. Follow these tips to stay safe!
